The Future of Learning: Immersive Education through VR and the Metaverse

The integration of the metaverse and VR into education has the potential to revolutionize the way students learn. By creating immersive and personalized environments, these technologies can enhance engagement and retention of material, as well as provide new opportunities for collaboration and communication among students and educators.

In recent years, virtual reality (VR) and the metaverse have become increasingly popular in the fields of education and training. Both South Korea and Japan have taken advantage of the potential of these technologies, incorporating them into classrooms and training programs. The use of the metaverse as a teaching tool offers an immersive environment for personalized learning, breaking the constraints of physical classrooms.

One significant example of this is Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) in South Korea, which is transforming into a “metaversity” (Metaverse + University). The university plans to digitize its classrooms in the metaverse and offer courses in cyberspace, investing $300,000 annually in equipment and program development for students with an additional $500,000 to create metaverse classrooms.

In Japan, N and S High Schools, N schools are schools that’s lessons are held online while S schools are traditional schools with in person classes, have more than 7,000 students learning using VR, with classes being moved to the metaverse to enable learning without physical constraints.

Both South Korea and Japan are heavily investing in the development of the metaverse and VR, promoting digital literacy and planning to expand the use of various technologies that support digital transformation. In 2022, South Korea’s Ministry of Science announced an investment of 223.7 billion won ($166 million USD) to promote a Metaverse ecosystem while Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida stated his country wants to provide corresponding support to accelerate the digital transformation in the public and private sectors.

Other countries, like Germany and Poland, are also working on integrating VR as a teaching tool in educational institutions.

Globally, the use of VR as a teaching tool is on the rise. For example, in California, a school set up an ambitious VR lab to teach students in an immersive environment while VR Heroes, Meta and National Research Institute are working together in Poland to teach teachers how to use the technology.

Similarly, in the United States, universities such as Stanford, Harvard, and the University of Michigan have already started experimenting with the use of VR and the metaverse in their teaching methods. For example, the University of Michigan has created a virtual anatomy lab, where students can explore the human body in a three-dimensional environment. This immersive experience allows students to better understand the complexity of the human body and the relationships between different organs.

The use of the metaverse and VR in education has the potential to transform the way students learn, providing an immersive and personalized environment that can enhance engagement and retention. However, there are also concerns about the potential negative effects, such as addiction and social isolation. As with any new technology, it is important to carefully consider its benefits and drawbacks and use it in a responsible and balanced way.

The investment in the technology showcases the commitment of both countries in promoting digital literacy and accelerating the digital transformation in the public and private sectors.
